Erykah Badu teases first album in 15 years as she receives Billboard icon award

While being recognized as a Billboard Icon, Erykah Badu releases her first album in 15 years. Los Angeles, India - Neo-soul icon Erykah Badu, celebrated for her profound impact on music and culture, received the prestigious Icon Award at the 2025 Billboard Women in Music event held at the YouTube Theater in Inglewood, California on Saturday. Adding to the momentous occasion, the five-time Grammy winner offered a tantalizing glimpse into her musical future, hinting at her first full-length album in fifteen years.

Born Erica Abi Wright in Dallas, Texas, Badu has carved a unique and enduring path in the music industry since her groundbreaking 1997 debut album, "Baduizm." Her innovative fusion of jazz, soul, hip-hop, and R&B, coupled with her distinctive spiritual and socially conscious lyrics, has solidified her status as a true visionary. Hits like "On & On," "Appletree," "Tyrone," and "Bag Lady" have not only topped charts but have also resonated deeply with generations of listeners.

During her acceptance speech for the Icon Award, presented by singer Summer Walker, Badu expressed her gratitude and reflected on her journey. However, the most exciting news for her devoted fanbase came with a subtle yet significant tease. Badu mentioned working on new music in the studio while talking about her creative process and ongoing inspiration. This revelation aligns with recent reports indicating that Badu has been working on a new album, slated to be her first since 2010's "New Amerykah Part Two (Return of the Ankh)." Adding further buzz, it has been revealed that the entire project is being produced by the acclaimed hip-hop producer The Alchemist, known for his work with a diverse range of artists including Freddie Gibbs, Earl Sweatshirt, and many more.

In a recent interview with Billboard, coinciding with her Icon Award honor, Badu confirmed her dedication to the new album, stating she "can't wait until it's done." While details regarding the album's title, tracklist, and official release date remain scarce, the collaboration with The Alchemist suggests a potentially fresh sonic landscape for Badu's signature sound, blending her neo-soul sensibilities with hip-hop textures.

Badu, who also received the Fashion Icon award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America in 2024, has remained a vibrant presence in the cultural zeitgeist through her captivating live performances, activism, and unique style. While she released the mixtape "But You Caint Use My Phone" in 2015, fans have eagerly awaited a full studio album for over a decade.

Her emphasis on live performance over recording was highlighted in her Billboard interview: "I tour eight months out of the year for the past 25 years. That's what I do. I am a performance artist. I am not a recording artist. I come from the theatre. It's the immediate reaction between you and the audience and the immediate feeling. The point where you become one living, breathing organism with people. That's what I live for. It's my therapy. And theirs, too. We're in it together."

The news of Badu's forthcoming album has ignited excitement across social media and among music critics, who eagerly anticipate the next chapter in her influential career. Her ability to consistently push boundaries and deliver thought-provoking music has cemented her legacy as an icon, and the prospect of new material after such a long hiatus is a significant event for the music world.

As Erykah Badu continues to be celebrated for her past contributions and groundbreaking artistry, the tease of a new album signals an exciting future, promising to further solidify her iconic status and undoubtedly inspire a new generation of artists. The wait for this highly anticipated project has officially begun, with fans eager to hear what sonic explorations the "High Priestess of Neo-Soul" and The Alchemist have conjured.
